How to Use the FishForge Builder

The Expert

For experienced anglers who know what they want:

  • Use the "Any" button to access all gear without water type or species recommendations
  • Add the gear you know you want directly to your build
  • Compare specs and prices across different brands and models
  • Focus on compatibility and performance optimization

The builder will automatically check compatibility and show you the best options for your preferences.

The Beginner

New to fishing or targeting an unfamiliar species? Follow this complete step-by-step guide to build your combo.

Step 1: Choose Your Fishing Environment

Start by selecting your fishing environment on the builder page:

  • Any: For general fishing or when you're not targeting specific water types
  • Freshwater: For lakes, rivers, and ponds
  • Saltwater: For ocean, bay, and coastal fishing

This choice helps filter gear that's appropriate for your fishing conditions and ensures compatibility.

Step 2: Select Your Target Species (Optional)

If you know what fish you're targeting, select it from the dropdown:

  • Freshwater: Bass, Walleye, Pike, Muskie, Lake Trout

This helps the system recommend gear that's optimized for targeting a species.

Step 3: Build Your Combo Piece by Piece

Click on each gear type to browse and select your equipment:

Essential Gear (Start Here):
  • Rod: The foundation of your setup
  • Reel: Must be compatible with your rod
  • Line: Connects everything together
Optional Gear:
  • Lures: What attracts the fish
  • Terminal Tackle: Hooks, weights, and more
  • Accessories: Tools and other helpful items

The system will automatically check compatibility between your selections and provide recommendations.

Step 4: Review and Save Your Build

As you build, your combo summary will appear on the right side:

  • Total price calculation
  • Compatibility warnings and recommendations
  • Build summary with all selected gear

Once satisfied, save your build to compare with other combinations or reference later.

Pro Tips for Beginners

  • Start Simple: Focus on rod, reel, and line first. You can fish with just these three items.
  • Check Compatibility: Pay attention to the compatibility warnings - they prevent costly mistakes.
  • Consider Your Budget: Quality gear lasts longer, but you don't need the most expensive options to start.
  • Ask for Help: Use the info tooltips on each gear type for detailed explanations.
